Review - Impulse Sealer from Harbor Freight

Ok this is a review of a Impulse Sealer from the dreaded Harbor Freight. HF is one of those companies that people either love or hate. I personally like the store and they have good deals on some stuff.

Anyway, I have always struggled with sealing my mylar bags with either my food saver and/or an Iron. I can never seem to get the iron at the right temperature and when im done ironing them it looks like it got ran over by a mack truck or something. Ive never felt comfortable and secure doing them with an iron. I have been looking for an better option but the sealers ive seen have been more than i feel comfortable spending. Impulse sealers have caught my eye lately but I wasnt sure if they would work. I have read places that it did and places that it didn't, so when a 15.5" 39.00 buck impulse sealer caught my eye i was willing to give it a shot.

This is what I picked up

The dial has 8 heat settings. I though it would adjust the time, but the time seems to remain constant and only the amount of heat is changed.

This is pic of a (double) seal on the highest setting. Kinda hard to see with the flash and the line blends in with the sealer, but its a solid seal.

Just to make sure I filled a bag with about 20% water and rolled it up and squeezed as hard as I could and not a drop of water came out and it seems to be holding pretty well.

Now I have only played with it a few hours but as of right now I am totally happy with price, function and quality of the seal. On a side note these are LDS bags and are the thickest bags I have ever used at 7mils, so if it can handle these anything thinner should be a home run.

Price 10/10

Availabilty 8/10 - Not available at your local store. Only online with a shipping cost. No tax bonuse so shipping/no tax was a wash.

Ease of use 9/10 - Site said 8 sec burn from what I can remember, but doesnt seem to be correct.

Overall 9.5/10 - Way to go harbor freight ! Chalk one up for much much easier preps and prep time.

Thanks. I tried to get one last year and they kept backordering me to the point that HF actually cancelled my order.

May have to look again. I have a ton of those LDS bags.

We bought the same sealer from Harbor Freight. So far we have sealed around 50 bags with it and it works great. I have a sealer at work that I paid about 4 times as much for and the only thing different is the Harbor Freight one has a more narrow sealing ribbon or seal line. I put 2 or 3 seal lines on each bag to ensure its sealed. The one from Harbor Freight comes with exta sealing ribbons, I paid extra to get those for the one at work.

Tech Guy- Did you get one yet?

I've used a similar type of sealer and it seals very well.

If you double seal you can time it to seal well on the first and to seal/cut
on the second. Depends on how long you hold it down....

No, i haven't even tried again. I guess I need to. I have been busy with making jam, and doing a little more with glass masons.

Guess I need to make another go at the sealer.

Just got mine in and had to do 25 lbs. of flour. Man that thing is the trick! We did several bags in seconds. Almost didn't seem fair that it was done so fast. Really didn't get a chance to enjoy it. I guess I will have to go out and buy more stuff just to use it. Sure is a lot easier that an iron and a board. Can't go wrong with this heat sealer. Wish we would have had it when we first started stocking up 2 years ago. Better late than never. Thanks for the heads up!

Normally, we feed purina dog chow and science diet for the cat, BUT..

We stock the ol roy canned food for the dogs along with the wal mart special kitty cat food in the preps. I can store a months supply on half a shelf.

Cheap, stores forever, more calories for the storage space.

My local HF (Greenville, SC) had never heard of the item and told me to go on line. They said if it was there, that is the only way you can get it. I did it over the phone with no problems. Trust me, it is worth the money in speed!
